Dispersion - Tambour: a study for marching drum, by Emmanuel JAY.
As the title suggests, this ABA piece keeps scattering the listener between shifting time signatures, dynamics and beat subdivisions. The A section remains much the same from the introduction to the finale. Care should be taken to keep it steady. Set for the CMF second cycle C, marching drum. The lilt of the compound metre falls on the first beat. In the B section, where the whole scattering effect plays out, the stresses of each bar need to be felt clearly.
Designed for one player, it also lends itself to unison playing, in class as in recital.
