Move — 12 Grooves for Marimba, by Bart Quartier: twelve study pieces for solo marimba.
As the title suggests, the collection works on placement: timing, pulse, rhythm and above all the space between the notes. The twelve grooves draw on styles from different cultures — hence the importance of listening to and feeling this music, so wide is the gap between the notation and the playing. The composer invites players to make the pieces their own: the marimba parts can be split, several marimbas used, other percussion added. Improvisation is not compulsory, but it is warmly encouraged. Bart Quartier teaches keyboard percussion, both classical and jazz, at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels. His collections — Image, Profils, Encore, Ensemble, Imagine, Focus, Dialogue and Move — are distributed worldwide.
